Mix of cultures or culture that infuses

 From the classroom to the pub, Ireland is a very unique and interesting country is what I have learned. For one of my classes titled literary Ireland, I read The Crock of Gold by James Stephens and I had noticed that the Irish culture is very much a mix of other cultures. Nowhere is this more apparent than in everyday life. A local said it best, there is a story of an old woman who was asked if she believed in fairies, to which she replied "God knows I don't, but they are still there". This unique perspective is what makes Ireland such a literary gem as it has lots of different cultures baked in. Last night I did pub trivia, and realized I knew more of it than I thought, which had me wondering if these things were more universal than I thought, or was Irish music becoming Americanized.  I have conversed with locals and I still find it hard to tell because of the nature of Irish emigration and their history of belonging to other countries and sometimes bringing those ideas back. I look forward to learning more about the Irish culture and what makes it more unique than what I have currently seen.

Friday we celebrated Dr Reed's Birthday with our Irish community supporters, mixing our food and culture together. Which is perfect timing because it was also the food festival that weekend. For the food festival, we worked it in the morning and afternoon shifts, I had morning shift both days which I liked because I could explore after my shift. It was amazing to see all the different cultures and types of food available the first day. I got a taco to eat and a crepe. The next day they moved to Gratton square where they had market stalls for venders which were more things to sell than food this time. So I didn't stay so long afterwards. That night though we went to the theatre to watch an Irish folk band named Clancy's Kitchen. The Stopwatch of Time

On my travels to Ireland, Scotland, and Holland, I have noticed that history is not always history and is still very much apart of the culture and day to day life. Not only are the traditions older, so are the buildings and are often retro-fitted to house different things. This happens in the United States too but not all that often because of how much older the buildings in other countries are and how they still stand to this day. While some places in the United States have living history like this or customs and cultures that still exist, not all of the United States does and this is what is interesting. I am used to being from Texas and people still acting like it is its own country and being proud to be from there, although when I go to other states I hardly get that feeling. Another example is travelling through the deep south and Confederate things are still prevalent. Saint Declan and his magic rock

On the 9th of April, our professors surprised us with a daytrip to the small coastal town of Ardmore. We were lucky to get a local to show us around and tell us all about the history of the town and what that history means to them. We took the local link bus to get there, which was a small county bus that had an interesting route there and back twisting through country roads so we could take in the scenes. Since Armore is in the gaeltech region, at some points as we approached ring (An Rinn) we saw signs only in Gaelige which was a culture shock even though I know I am in a different country. Now back to Ardmore, since that is where we went, we ended up doing the cliffwalk there as a thing to do. This was included in our tour as the Cliffwalk was at the beginning of Saint Declans well. Saint Declan was an earlier Saint than Saint Patrick in Ireland and so he is very prominent in Ardmore because that is where he supposedly landed in Ireland.
